Antonov An-225 Mriya: The Story of an Aviation Giant
8
The Antonov An-225 Mriya was one of the most extraordinary aircraft ever built. With six powerful jet engines, an enormous wingspan, and the ability to transport cargo that few other aircraft could carry, it became a symbol of aviation engineering and Ukrainian achievement.
Its name, Mriya, means “Dream” in Ukrainian. For more than three decades, this remarkable aircraft demonstrated what was possible when engineering ambition met extraordinary scale.
1. The birth of a giant
The An-225 was developed by the Antonov Design Bureau in Soviet-era Ukraine during the 1980s. Its original purpose was to transport the Soviet Buran space shuttle and components of the Energia rocket system.
Based partly on the smaller Antonov An-124 Ruslan, the An-225 featured an extended fuselage, six engines instead of four, and a distinctive twin-tail configuration designed to accommodate large external loads.
The aircraft made its first flight on December 21, 1988, beginning a remarkable chapter in aviation history.
2. Technical specifications
| Specification | Antonov An-225 |
|---|---|
| Manufacturer | Antonov |
| Country of origin | Ukraine (then Soviet Union) |
| First flight | December 21, 1988 |
| Length | 84 m |
| Wingspan | 88.4 m |
| Height | 18.1 m |
| Engines | 6 × Ivchenko-Progress D-18T turbofans |
| Maximum takeoff weight | 640,000 kg |
| Maximum payload | Approximately 250,000 kg |
| Cruise speed | Approximately 800 km/h |
| Range | Approximately 15,400 km without cargo |
| Crew | Typically 6 flight crew |
| Completed aircraft | 1 |
Its maximum takeoff weight of 640 tonnes made the An-225 the heaviest aircraft ever to fly.
3. Engineering innovations
Six powerful engines
Six D-18T turbofan engines provided the thrust required to lift enormous loads. Their combined thrust was approximately 1,374 kN.
32 landing-gear wheels
Its complex landing gear distributed the aircraft’s immense weight across airport surfaces and allowed maneuvering on the ground.
Hinged nose cargo door
The aircraft’s nose could swing upward, allowing exceptionally large equipment and industrial cargo to enter its cavernous hold.
4. Record-breaking achievements
The An-225 established numerous world aviation records, including achievements involving payload, altitude, and the transportation of unusually heavy or oversized cargo.
Among its most famous achievements were:
- Carrying a record-setting single cargo item weighing approximately 187.6 tonnes in 2009.
- Transporting extremely large power-generation equipment and industrial machinery.
- Carrying the Soviet Buran space shuttle on its back during its early operational life.
- Supporting international humanitarian and emergency cargo missions.
The An-225 became a global attraction wherever it landed, drawing aviation enthusiasts and photographers to airports around the world.
5. The tragic destruction in 2022
On February 27, 2022, the An-225 was destroyed at Hostomel Airport near Kyiv during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The aircraft had been undergoing maintenance and remained at its home airport when fighting began. Its destruction was a devastating loss to the aviation community and Ukraine’s aerospace heritage.

6. Will the An-225 fly again?
Plans to rebuild Mriya have been discussed, potentially using the second, unfinished airframe originally started during the Soviet era.
However, as of October 2026, no completed replacement or confirmed first-flight date has been announced. The cost, technical complexity, and continuing war remain major obstacles.

7. The legacy of Mriya
The Antonov An-225 was more than a cargo aircraft. It represented an extraordinary achievement in aerospace engineering, demonstrating how specialized aircraft could transport loads once considered nearly impossible to move by air.
Although the original Mriya no longer flies, its engineering achievements, records, and influence remain part of aviation history.
The aircraft was destroyed, but the dream it represented lives on.
